APPRENTICESHIP
Pattern Cutters play a vital role in transforming design concepts into production-ready products across the fashion and textiles industry.
Working with a range of materials and product types, including clothing, soft furnishings, leather goods, marine and medical textiles, apprentices develop the technical skills needed to interpret design briefs, create accurate patterns and support efficient manufacturing processes.
This apprenticeship is designed for employers looking to develop skilled professionals who can bridge the gap between design and production, helping to improve product quality, reduce waste and support innovation across the business.
What Will Your Apprentice Learn?
Throughout this apprenticeship, learners will develop the technical knowledge, practical skills and behaviours required to create, evaluate and refine patterns for a range of sewn products.
Apprentices will learn how to:

- Understand the full sewn products supply chain, including customer requirements, production flow and delivery timelines
- Work with a range of fabrics and materials, understanding their structure, properties and behaviour in production
- Apply quality assurance standards to ensure garments meet specification, fit and finish requirements
- Create, adapt and develop block patterns into production-ready designs using both traditional and digital methods
- Use industry tools and CAD systems to support accurate pattern drafting, grading and technical development
- Interpret design briefs and translate them into functional, manufacturable pattern solutions
- Evaluate samples and prototypes, identifying fit, construction or design issues and implementing improvements
- Produce final master patterns with full technical specifications for manufacturing teams and suppliers
- Understand production constraints including timeframes, manufacturing processes and technical limitations
- Communicate effectively with production teams to ensure accurate execution and smooth workflow
- Maintain accurate technical documentation such as tech packs, measurements and production notes
- Follow health, safety and compliance requirements across all stages of production
- Demonstrate professional behaviours including teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability and attention to detail
- Take responsibility for work quality while continuously developing technical and practical skills

The apprenticeship concludes with an End-Point Assessment (EPA), including:
- Project report and supporting evidence
The apprentice documents the full pattern development process, including design interpretation, pattern creation, problem-solving, and collaboration with production staff such as sample machinists and fit teams. - Fit session observation
The apprentice presents a sample garment, identifies and discusses fit and construction issues, and works with others to agree practical pattern adjustments and improvements. - Professional discussion
The assessor leads a structured conversation exploring the apprentice’s knowledge, decision-making, and technical understanding, supported by evidence from the project.
Successful completion leads to a Level 3 Fashion & Textiles Pattern Cutter qualification, recognised across the textile industry.
