Pattern Cutters play a crucial role in the clothing and textiles industry, contributing to the production of various products ranging from clothing and fashion items to leather goods, soft furnishings, marine, and medical textiles. This course equips individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to interpret design briefs, draft patterns, and support the production process.

Core Responsibilities

Pattern Cutters:

• Interpret sewn product design briefs
• Draft prototype patterns reflecting design and technical specifications
• Collaborate with sample machinists to produce product samples
• Review and assess product samples
• Adjust prototype patterns to meet design and fit specifications
• Create final master patterns for production
• Support cutting and production processes

Knowledge

Pattern Cutters possess knowledge and understanding of:

• Supply chain and customer base requirements
• Properties and construction of fabric and materials
• Quality assurance procedures and standards
• Working practices including pattern construction techniques, grading, and specialist terminology
• Tools of the trade and material cutting processes
• Sample development, review techniques, and pattern rectification processes
• Computerized pattern production systems and technical documents used in pattern production
• Critical path management processes to ensure timely pattern production
