INDUSTRY OWNED AND NOT-FOR-PROFIT, TCOE EXISTS TO CHAMPION MANUFACTURING AND HELP EMPLOYERS, THEIR PEOPLE AND OUR SECTOR THRIVE
There’s a huge amount happening across our industry, so this is a bumper edition. Grab a coffee, give me five minutes and have a read. From apprenticeship funding and jobs, to international trade and four free events, there’s something here for everyone.
One small favour. We know this newsletter doesn’t always reach your whole workforce, so please forward it across your organisation. We want as many people as possible to benefit.
APPRENTICESHIPS: THE BUSINESS CASE JUST GOT STRONGER
Having worked as a national apprenticeship expert advising Ministers on funding, I’m a huge advocate for apprenticeships, but ultimately, the results speak for themselves. Our latest Apprenticeship Qualification Achievement Rate is 82% compared with a national rate of 60.8%. That’s more than 20 percentage points higher and a fantastic testament to our learners, employers and training team.
The financial case has got even stronger too. Employers can benefit from fully funded apprenticeship training for under-25s, and in many cases for those over 25 too.
Better still, employers don’t pay Employers’ National Insurance for apprentices under 25, whether they’re new recruits or existing staff moving onto an apprenticeship – saving employers thousands per staff member.
I’ve also shared my thoughts here on why the Prime Minister is right to champion technical education, but why we now need to make the skills system much simpler for employers.
Apprenticeships can bring in new talent, upskill and retain existing staff, tackle skills shortages and help plan for an ageing workforce. If any of those sound familiar, talk to us for a no-obligation skills discussion.
WHY TRAIN WITH TCOE?
Being industry-owned and not-for-profit means there are no shareholders taking profits out of TCoE. We keep training competitively priced and reinvest any profit back into skills and our sector.

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION We were delighted to support Harpreet Uppal MP’s brilliant Summer School, giving young people access to experiences and opportunities they would not normally have. From meeting Prime Minister Andy Burnham to visiting Antich & Sons and taking on TCoE’s Dragon’s Den manufacturing innovation challenge, they got a real insight into politics, business and manufacturing. This is just one of over 50 school and college events we’ve supported this year. We’re passionate about raising aspirations and showing young people the opportunities available across textiles, manufacturing and beyond. Read more and watch the video by clicking here. BRINGING INDUSTRY AND ACADEMIA CLOSER TOGETHER I’m delighted to welcome Professor Parik Goswami to the TCoE Board as our first ever Board member from academia. Parik brings world-leading expertise in technical textiles, research, innovation and sustainability. Bringing industry and academia closer is increasingly important as we respond to new technologies, sustainability and changing skills needs. We have ambitious plans and I’m looking forward to the knowledge, challenge and different perspective Parik will bring in order to help our member companies. Read more here about Parik’s appointment. 28 LIVE VACANCIES. CONNECTING TALENT WITH OUR INDUSTRY There are 28 live jobs and apprenticeships across our member companies on our website. Recruiting? FOUR FREE EVENTS This might be my favourite part of this edition. We have four very different events coming up and every single one is free to attend. 21 August | Building Our Manufacturing Community | FREE We want to build a manufacturing community that stays with people throughout their careers, so we’re bringing TCoE apprentices and alumni together for our latest TCoE Aspire event. There’ll be networking, free food and drinks, pool, darts and shuffleboard. More importantly, it’s a chance to connect, meet new people and build relationships across our industry. To find out more and join us click here. 24 September | National Manufacturing Day at Camira | FREE I’m really looking forward to joining TCoE Chair and Camira CEO Alan Williams and other industry leaders at Camira for the Huddersfield Unlimited Business Forum, sponsored by TCoE, celebrating National Manufacturing Day. Yorkshire has an incredible manufacturing story. Come and celebrate it, hear from business leaders and make new connections. Great speakers. Great businesses. Great networking. Completely free. Book your place here. 12 November | A Transformative UK-Pakistan Opportunity | FREE This could be one of the most commercially significant events we’ve helped to create. TCoE is co-organising the inaugural UK-Pakistan Economic Partnership Summit at the University of Bradford alongside key partners. Around 100 carefully selected senior leaders from government, industry, trade and investment from both countries will come together, with textiles and manufacturing as a key focus. For our members, the potential is huge. New customers, suppliers, markets, investment and partnerships, plus direct access to people who can help to open doors. If you trade with Pakistan or want to import, export, invest or collaborate, don’t miss it. Attendance is free but places are extremely limited – book now.
25 November | Meet the Leaders Shaping the Future of Manufacturing | FREE Our last Breakfast Briefing brought together more than 80 business leaders with speakers from our member companies, Arville Textiles, Burberry, Bentley Motors and the University of Leeds. Now we have another brilliant line-up:
These mornings are about more than inspirational speakers. They’re about putting good people in a room together, sharing ideas, making introductions and creating opportunities. If you haven’t joined us before, this is a great one to start with. Breakfast is on us and attendance is FREE. REPRESENTING OUR INDUSTRY A big part of TCoE’s role is making sure our industry has a voice where it matters. Recently, that has meant representing textile manufacturers in Parliament on energy costs and joining Apprenticeship Provider of the Year Arville Textiles for a visit from Sir Alec Shelbrooke MP to discuss their investment in advanced manufacturing and commitment to skills training. We were also proud to support the brilliant Weavers’ Challenge. 380 miles, 10 women’s prisons, six days and five bikes to highlight the impact of women’s imprisonment. It links closely to our own prison partnerships, helping people gain recognised textile skills and pathways into employment after release. Through my role chairing the West Yorkshire Creative Industries Board, we’re also helping shape the skills needed to unlock billions of pounds of future economic growth.
