Learner of the Month – Rhys Hughes at Standard Wool

We’re delighted to recognise Rhys Hughes, Wool Technician at Standard Wool, as our latest Learner of the Month.

Rhys joined Standard Wool straight from school and initially started on work experience. Despite finding classroom-style learning challenging, he quickly found his stride and secured a permanent role with the company. Coming into the textile industry with little prior knowledge, Rhys has taken to his role with enthusiasm and determination.

The firm started Rhys on his Textile Manufacturing Operative Apprenticeship last year and he has made remarkable strides in his learning.

“I really enjoy the manual work as I’m not good at just sitting down; I prefer to be up and about. There is so much to learn about this industry and within my role.”

He spoke about his learning with the Textile Centre of Excellence:
“I really enjoyed my learning sessions with Richard as he doesn’t overload us with too much information at once, he allows us to take it all in at our pace.”

Rhys has been with Standard Wool for a year and is going from strength to strength. With plenty of career progression opportunities ahead, he’s set to continue his journey and grow even further within the company.

Mark Powell, Rhys’ supervisor, is passionate about futureproofing the workforce. Having completed his own apprenticeship when he started his career, Mark believes it’s vital to support new talent and widen opportunities for the team:

“Anything we can do to help bring people on is worthwhile. It’s great to broaden the prospects of the team.”

Richard Woodhead, Rhys’ tutor, adds:
“It’s been a pleasure supporting Rhys on his apprenticeship journey. He’s really embraced the hands-on learning and consistently shows curiosity and commitment. He’s making excellent progress and I’m excited to see how far he’ll go in his career.”

Congratulations, Rhys – we look forward to seeing your continued success!
